The British Shorthair is one of the most popular “family cat” breeds in many countries. It is the British Shorthair’s temperament that has helped this beautiful and distinguished cat gain such popularity.
Activity and play
British Shorthairs are very well balanced and are not known for excessive activity. Their solid, teddy-bear-like build partly contributes to this. Cats of this breed are not usually inclined to climb curtains or explore the highest shelves in the house. This does not mean that they do not enjoy or know how to play. They love playing with people as well as with other cats and even dogs, provided they are used to living with them. British Shorthair kittens will naturally seek out play more often than adult cats.
Cuddles and affection
British Shorthairs are very affectionate. Our cats love long cuddling and stroking sessions, loudly expressing their contentment with a gentle purr. If their owner allows it, they will happily spend the night in the bedroom. Of course, every cat is different and has its own personality, which should always be respected. It is also worth remembering that a cat will not necessarily offer its belly for a scratch straight away. That level of trust has to be earned. If we patiently wait until the cat feels safe and confident with us, we are likely to receive plenty of affection, cuddles and attention in return.
Separations and reunions
British Shorthairs are very affectionate and become strongly attached to their owners. They patiently cope with everyday separations when family members go to work or school, but longer holiday absences can be more difficult for them. If circumstances allow, it may be worth considering taking your cat with you on holiday. A British Shorthair is usually not difficult to travel with. All it really needs is its litter tray, food and its beloved owner. If taking the cat with you is not possible, it is essential to arrange trustworthy care while you are away.
Intelligence
Cats of all breeds are extremely intelligent. They quickly learn the daily habits of the household and may, for example, wait eagerly by the door when they hear the familiar sound of their owner’s footsteps in the stairwell. They also learn very quickly how the bedroom door opens and what sound the refrigerator makes :). Every new day is a lesson, and cats are excellent students.
